This award recognises procedures for carrying out risk assessments, data analysis and introducing tailored interventions. BT was chosen for its well thought-out and comprehensive approach, founded on rigorous data collection and analysis including:

  • A huge programme of online risk assessments, training and coaching feeding into a risk data warehouse; from which information is used to target specific training to those who need it.
  • Policies and processes are under constant review, and two Masters dissertations by employees and PhD research have been based on the programme, further helping to shape, evaluate, sustain and share it.
  • Halving its collision rate and cost across a huge fleet of more than 34,000 vehicles by continuing to improve the programme over a 10 year period, reducing claims from 59 to 27 per 1,000 vehicles and annual costs by over £14 million.

Risk management of drivers is a very complex process requiring a long term undertaking to achieve the kind of results recognized at the Brake Awards tonight – but congratulations are also due to all the entrants for their hard work and commitment to assessing, managing and supporting their drivers”.
