Wearing Headphones While Driving in Texas

Is it legal in Texas to wear headphones?

Headphones

In most states, it is illegal to wear headphones while driving, and with good reason. It is as unsafe as leaving your music loud enough to overshadow emergency vehicle sirens and other warning sounds, leaving you unable to use something you need for safe driving: your hearing.

In Texas, there is no law concerning headphones at all, so while it is legal to wear headphones while driving, it's not recommended. Even if your headphones aren't loud enough to block out all external sounds, you could still be putting yourself at risk.

If the headphone cord gets tangled in your hands, you could have problems steering the car during a turn. If something bumps the cord or pulls on it, your headphones might fall off, causing you to be distracted from the driving task. Our Texas defensive driving course teaches you to always be focused on the driving task, and how distractions while driving can lead to crashes.
