British Columbians are being urged to stay local over the May long weekend to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The Government is reminding people to avoid all non-essential travel and only visit the parks and recreation sites close to their home if they want to enjoy the outdoors.

Residents are also being asked to avoid travelling to small communities and not to visit vacation properties.

Recreational mariners are reminded to avoid non-essential trips on the water and stay close to home. The government says each search-and-rescue that specialists have to respond to puts them at risk of exposure to COVID-19, and requires them to use precious supplies of personal protective equipment.

The Government is also advising that BC Ferries are currently only available for essential travel, with COVID-19 screening a Transport Canada requirement for sailings over 30 minutes in duration.
