More than 100 schools, councils and community organisations across Victoria are being supported to deliver community initiatives to help reduce road trauma.
This year’s $1.5 million Community Road Safety Grants Program is supporting groups to deliver hundreds of road safety education initiatives and programs to keep communities safe.
The 232 funded initiatives include education sessions and campaigns for vulnerable and at-risk drivers, cyclists and pedestrians as well as programs addressing issues such as fatigue and high-risk driver behaviour.
Other initiatives include education sessions for newly arrived migrants to increase their Victorian road knowledge, learner and probationary driver programs, and anti-drink and drug driving programs for young Victorians.
The program will also fund roadside banners, speed advisory signage and mobile billboards as part of targeted community awareness campaigns to deter high-risk behaviour like speeding, drink driving, using a mobile phone, or driving tired.
This year’s $1.5 million investment is in addition to the $6.4 million invested in the Community Road Safety Grants Program across Victoria in the past five years.
“Local communities know their roads first-hand and these grants empower people to really make a difference at a local level by delivering invaluable road safety education and initiatives where it’s needed most,” said Executive Director Road Safety Victoria, Marcelo Vidales.
