Wellington Police are cracking down on red light runners and focusing on driver behaviour at intersections, as part of a focused prevention road safety operation throughout July.
Intersections are a leading factor in serious crashes in Wellington District and police are urging all drivers to take extra care and be more aware of their surroundings â particularly in the city.
From Monday 11 July 2016, officers will be actively patrolling intersections in the city, focusing on high risk locations. Drivers who run a red light should expect to receive an infringement notice with a $150 fine.
Motorists caught using mobile phones, speeding, driving under the influence of drink or drugs, or not wearing seat belts, can also expect to be penalised.
âRunning a red light is dangerous and poses a genuine threat to the safety of motorists, cyclists and pedestrians,â said Wellington response manager Senior Sergeant Jason McCarthy. âThe risks arenât worth it.
âThis is a reminder that anyone driving dangerously could be stopped anytime, anywhere. All road users have a responsibility to keep themselves and others safe.â
Wellington City Council is also highlighting the dangers of running a red light through its annual Stop on Red campaign.
