The UK’s Department of Transport (DfT) has opened a public consultation on stricter penalties for using a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving.

The consultation invites feedback on proposals for increasing the fixed penalty notice level from £100 to £150 for all drivers.

It also welcomes views on increasing the number of penalty points issued from three to four for non-HGV drivers and from three to six for drivers operating a heavy goods vehicle.

The consultation can be viewed online. The closing date for comments is 15 March 2016.
