South Carolina is the state with most fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel, according to a new report published by WalletHub.

To determine the safest states in which to live in America, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 48 key safety indicators grouped into five categories; personal and residential safety, financial safety, road safety, workplace safety and emergency preparedness.

The states with fewest fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles of travel were:

  1. Massachusetts
  2. Rhode Island
  3. Minnesota
  4. New Jersey
  5. New York

Overall, the safest state in which to live was found to be Vermont.
