October 5 is International Walk to School Day, a global event that involves communities from more than 40 countries walking and biking to school on the same day.

The Day began in 1997 as a one-day event and has now become part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school.

Schools across America will take part, as will schools from countries including Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, India and European countries including the United Kingdom.

The event highlights the benefits of walking or cycling to school, including safety, health, a cleaner environment, community benefits and a sense of fun.
