A new law to help provide a safe working environment for roadside emergency responders will go into effect March 2018, the Western Australia (WA) State Government has announced.
The “Slow Down, Move Over” (SLOMO) law requires drivers to slow down around stationary emergency vehicles, tow trucks, Incident Response Service vehicles and motor break-down service vehicles that are displaying flashing lights while attending an incident.
“These are high-risk working environments, so we need to provide a safe environment for those incident responders to conduct their work,” said Acting Road Safety Commissioner Iain Cameron. “The ability to manage the environment around emergency and breakdown situations is challenging.

The SLOMO law require motorists to slow down to 40 km/h when passing vehicles used by WA Police Force, St John Ambulance, Department of Fire and Emergency Services, RAC WA, Main Roads WA Incident Response Service and towing companies on site to salvage or tow vehicles.
The penalty for the offence is three demerit points and $300.
