{"id":10389,"date":"2021-01-28T23:41:08","date_gmt":"2021-01-28T23:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=10389"},"modified":"2021-01-28T23:41:08","modified_gmt":"2021-01-28T23:41:08","slug":"government-told-uk-drink-driving-laws-no-longer-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/government-told-uk-drink-driving-laws-no-longer-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Government told UK drink driving laws no longer work"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK&#8217;s system to prevent drink driving is no longer adequate, according <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacts.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/PACTS-Drink-Driving-Taking-stock-moving-forward-Report-2.0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to a new report<\/a> from the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS).<\/p>\n<p>The report reveals that, since 2010, around 240 people have died each year in collisions involving a driver who was over the legal drink drive limit. Drink driving remains one of the biggest single causes of fatal collisions, at around 13 percent.<\/p>\n<p>The PACTS report is calling for a broader approach to tackle the problem, combining improved enforcement, health measures and alternative transport provision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The report recommends:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mandatory breath testing powers for the police and the reduction in enforcement levels to be reversed<\/li>\n<li>Increased penalties for drivers who combine drink and drugs<\/li>\n<li>Specialist rehabilitation courses for those with mental health and alcohol problems<\/li>\n<li>A lower breath test limit for England and Wales<\/li>\n<li>Reforming the High Risk Offender Scheme<\/li>\n<li>That the government pay more attention to drink driving in alcohol harm and night-time economy policies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cAfter 10 years of declining levels of enforcement and social media campaigns aimed at young men, it is time for a new, more comprehensive approach to reducing the toll of drink drive deaths and injuries,\u201d said David Davies, Executive Director of PACTS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrink driving is often cited as a road safety success story, yet it remains a major killer and progress has ground to a halt since 2010.
