{"id":10457,"date":"2021-03-01T17:59:27","date_gmt":"2021-03-01T17:59:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=10457"},"modified":"2021-03-01T17:59:27","modified_gmt":"2021-03-01T17:59:27","slug":"u-s-driving-last-year-lowest-in-two-decades","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/u-s-driving-last-year-lowest-in-two-decades\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. driving last year lowest in two decades"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The number of miles traveled by U.S. drivers dropped by more than 13 percent last year &#8211; the first decrease in six years.<\/p>\n<p>Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) new year-end estimates reveal total miles fell from 3.3 trillion VMT in 2019 to 2.83 trillion in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>This decrease equates to an estimated reduction of nearly 170 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions.<\/p>\n<p>The latest VMT data, published in FHWA\u2019s December 2020 \u2018Traffic Volume Trends\u2019 report \u2013 a monthly estimate of US road travel \u2013 shows that, combined, all miles driven on public roads and highways in 2020 was the lowest since 2002.<\/p>\n<p>Despite a significant reduction in overall traffic volume, <a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/813004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">preliminary data from the USDOT<\/a> shows that roadway fatalities fell only slightly \u2013 by an estimated two percent for the first six months of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The latest FHWA\u2019s \u2018Traffic Volume Trend\u2019 data can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fhwa.dot.gov\/policyinformation\/travel_monitoring\/tvt.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">viewed online<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The number of miles traveled by U.S. drivers dropped by more than 13 percent last year &#8211; the first decrease in six years.
