{"id":10513,"date":"2021-03-17T18:57:43","date_gmt":"2021-03-17T18:57:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=10513"},"modified":"2021-03-17T18:57:43","modified_gmt":"2021-03-17T18:57:43","slug":"motorists-misusing-cruise-control-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/motorists-misusing-cruise-control-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Motorists \u201cmisusing\u201d cruise control systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Drivers are using adaptive cruise control (ACC) to speed, according to a new study by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iihs.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Insurance Institute for Highway Safety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers say drivers are \u201csubstantially\u201d more likely to speed when using ACC or partial automation that combines that feature with lane centering than when not using either technology.<\/p>\n<p>When selecting a speed to \u201cset and forget,\u201d many drivers choose one over the limit, the study found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cACC does have some safety benefits, but it\u2019s important to consider how drivers might cancel out these benefits by misusing the system,\u201d said IIHS Statistician Sam Monfort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpeed at impact is among the most important factors in whether or not a crash turns out to be fatal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ACC is a more advanced version of traditional cruise control that uses sensors to calculate and maintain a preselected following distance from the vehicle ahead, eliminating the need for the driver to repeatedly brake and reset the system.
