{"id":10697,"date":"2021-06-24T22:01:41","date_gmt":"2021-06-24T22:01:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=10697"},"modified":"2021-06-24T22:01:41","modified_gmt":"2021-06-24T22:01:41","slug":"highway-code-updates-revealed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/highway-code-updates-revealed\/","title":{"rendered":"Highway Code updates revealed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Highways England has drafted updated guidance for The Highway Code with the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) to help road users better understand how motorways and high-speed roads operate.<\/p>\n<p>More than 3,200 people and organisations responded to a consultation on the guidance, with their comments directly leading to it being amended and improved. The amendments are expected to become part of The Highway Code later this year.<\/p>\n<p>The update will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Clearer advice on where to stop in an emergency<\/li>\n<li>The importance of not driving in a lane closed by a Red X<\/li>\n<li>The use of variable speed limits to manage congestion<\/li>\n<li>Updated guidance on key factors that contribute to safety-related incidents, including driving while tired, unroadworthy vehicles, safe towing, tailgating and driving in roadworks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThe updates to The Highway Code will help everyone who uses our busiest roads,\u201d said Jeremy Phillips, Highways England\u2019s Head of Road Safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to the input from road users, we have been able to produce clearer guidance on how to use our motorways and major A-roads which will make journeys even safer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In total, 33 existing rules will be amended, and two new rules will be introduced. The results of the consultation can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/review-of-the-highway-code-to-improve-safety-on-motorways-and-high-speed-roads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">viewed here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Highways England has also launched a campaign to help road users to understand what to do in an emergency on a motorway or high-speed road.
