{"id":10776,"date":"2021-07-22T15:00:53","date_gmt":"2021-07-22T15:00:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=10776"},"modified":"2021-07-20T22:41:19","modified_gmt":"2021-07-20T22:41:19","slug":"highways-england-lays-out-net-zero-roadmap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/highways-england-lays-out-net-zero-roadmap\/","title":{"rendered":"Highways England lays out net zero roadmap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Highways England has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/highways-england-lays-out-roadmapto-net-zero-by-2050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> it is taking \u201cimmediate and sustained action\u201d towards decarbonising\u202fEngland\u2019s motorways and A-roads, so they can continue to bring significant benefits to\u202fmotorists, communities\u202fand businesses in a net-zero\u202ffuture.<\/p>\n<p>Building on its work reducing\u202fcarbon since 2015,\u202fthe plan sets out a comprehensive roadmap\u202fto rapidly decarbonise\u202fthe strategic road network (SRN).<\/p>\n<p>Highways England aims to achieve this\u202fby\u202fputting roads at the heart of Britain\u2019s net zero future through three key commitments; achieving net zero for its own operations by 2030, delivering net zero road maintenance and construction by 2040; and supporting net zero carbon travel on our roads by 2050.<\/p>\n<p>Contractors and suppliers will also be required to\u202fact,\u202fincluding commitments to reduce carbon year-on-year\u202fby\u202fusing the latest technologies, so that by 2040 the country\u2019s road maintenance and construction is near zero emissions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHighways England recognises the threat of climate change and the risks it poses for us\u202fall. That\u2019s why we\u2019re pledging to take effective action\u202fto take carbon out of roads,\u201d said Nick Harris, Acting Chief Executive\u202fof Highways England. \u201cToday roads are a convenient, efficient and low-cost way to travel which is why 9 out of 10 passenger miles and 79 per cent of all freight moves on roads.
