{"id":10789,"date":"2021-07-26T15:00:13","date_gmt":"2021-07-26T15:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=10789"},"modified":"2021-07-21T18:27:19","modified_gmt":"2021-07-21T18:27:19","slug":"study-finds-biometric-data-can-help-in-design-of-safer-roadways","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/study-finds-biometric-data-can-help-in-design-of-safer-roadways\/","title":{"rendered":"Study finds biometric data can help in design of safer roadways"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Biometric data can be used to find potentially challenging and dangerous areas of urban infrastructure before a crash occurs, according to a new study published in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0001457521003183?casa_token=NN1bYfrlvYAAAAAA:q0NpSxUWCDxq90jvXAHFxl6I7J10er5oPpfYH-14d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Accident Analysis &amp; Prevention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Lead author\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.design.upenn.edu\/city-regional-planning\/graduate\/people\/megan-s-ryerson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Megan Ryerson<\/a>\u00a0led a team of researchers in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.design.upenn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stuart Weitzman School of Design<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seas.upenn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">School of Engineering and Applied Science<\/a>\u00a0in collecting and analyzing eye-tracking data from cyclists navigating Philadelphia\u2019s streets.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers concluded that individual-based metrics can provide a more proactive approach for designing safer roadways for bicyclists and pedestrians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday we have technology, data science, and the capability to study safety in ways that we didn\u2019t have when the field of transportation safety was born,\u201d says Ryerson. \u201cWe don\u2019t have to be reactive in planning safe transportation systems; we can instead develop innovative, proactive ways to evaluate the safety of our infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the researchers, current federal rules for installing safe transportation interventions at an unsafe crossing\u2014such as a crosswalk with a traffic signal\u2014require either a minimum of 90-100 pedestrians crossing this location every hour or a minimum of five pedestrians struck by a driver at that location in one year.
