{"id":10807,"date":"2021-08-16T17:02:48","date_gmt":"2021-08-16T17:02:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=10807"},"modified":"2021-09-07T18:36:32","modified_gmt":"2021-09-07T18:36:32","slug":"calls-to-issue-uk-drivers-with-penalty-points-for-not-wearing-seatbelt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/calls-to-issue-uk-drivers-with-penalty-points-for-not-wearing-seatbelt\/","title":{"rendered":"Calls to issue UK drivers with penalty points for not wearing seatbelt"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Drivers who fail to wear a seatbelt should be hit with three penalty points, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacts.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Parliament Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS)<\/a> has said.<\/p>\n<p>MPs want to make the change saying the current \u00a3100 fine does not emphasise to drivers the seriousness of the risk.<\/p>\n<p>The call comes as the UK marks 40 years since legislation was passed making seatbelt wearing compulsory in the front of cars.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation followed years of campaigning by medical and safety organisations and led to the formation of PACTS.<\/p>\n<p>The seatbelt wearing law came into force on 31 January 1983 and that year saw a 29 percent reduction in fatal injuries of front-seat passengers and a 30 percent drop in serious injuries reported.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeatbelts are a great success story but the job is not yet done,\u201d said David Davies, PACTS Executive Director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current \u00a3100 fine does not emphasise to drivers the seriousness of the risk and is out of step with the offences.
