This follows a year with increased motor vehicle fatality rates\u00a0across the country. To help reduce risk, the NSC is urging all Americans to proactively maintain the condition of their vehicles and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsc.org\/saferoads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">practice safe driving<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring this late-summer season, Americans will be driving at an increased rate, so it\u2019s important to make sure the vehicle you\u2019re driving is as safe as possible,\u201d said Mark Chung, Vice President, Roadway Practice, at NSC. \u201cWe encourage everyone to take two minutes this week to check their vehicles for recalls. You may not know if you and your loved ones are at risk until you\u00a0check.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the United States, over 50 million vehicles have unrepaired safety recalls, and many of those recalls involve defective parts that can pose serious risks to drivers or passengers.<\/p>\n<p>Any vehicle owner can learn whether they have an open recall by visiting\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.checktoprotect.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CheckToProtect.org<\/a>\u00a0and entering their license plate or 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number found on the driver\u2019s side dash, inside the driver\u2019s door, on registration documents or on one\u2019s insurance card.
