{"id":11047,"date":"2021-12-03T08:30:25","date_gmt":"2021-12-03T08:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=11047"},"modified":"2021-12-01T19:28:14","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T19:28:14","slug":"dangers-of-fatigue-impairment-highlighted-in-new-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/dangers-of-fatigue-impairment-highlighted-in-new-report\/","title":{"rendered":"Dangers of fatigue impairment highlighted in new report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tirf.ca\/about-tirf\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Traffic Injury Research Foundation<\/a> (TIRF) has released a <a href=\"https:\/\/tirf.ca\/downloading\/?dlm-dp-dl=6494\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new fact sheet<\/a> focusing on drug and fatigue related fatal collisions in Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Between 2000 and 2018, the number of drug-related road traffic fatalities increased from 266 in 2000 to a high of 551 in 2018, while the number of fatigue-related road traffic fatalities rose from 138 in 2000 to 159 in 2004 before falling to a low of 81 in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFatigue-related driving has not been as prevalent as drugged driving, however, some driving characteristics of fatigued drivers are similar to those of impaired drivers,\u201d said Ward Vanlaar, TIRF Chief Operating Officer. \u201cThese include uneven braking, fewer mirror checks for other vehicles, erratic speed and failing to stay in one\u2019s lane.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s critical drivers understand that being awake for 18 hours can result in impairment due to fatigue which is approximately equal to a blood alcohol concentration of .05. Furthermore, it is difficult for a sleepy or fatigued person to anticipate when they will fall asleep.
