{"id":11088,"date":"2021-12-16T17:02:42","date_gmt":"2021-12-16T17:02:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=11088"},"modified":"2021-12-16T17:02:42","modified_gmt":"2021-12-16T17:02:42","slug":"nz-alcohol-interlocks-prevent-almost-40000-attempts-to-drive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/nz-alcohol-interlocks-prevent-almost-40000-attempts-to-drive\/","title":{"rendered":"NZ alcohol interlocks prevent almost 40,000 attempts to drive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Alcohol interlocks in the cars of high-risk drunk drivers stopped 37,061 attempts to use the vehicle last year, according to new statistics revealed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the AA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An alcohol interlock works like an in-car breathalyser and became a mandatory sentence for many high-risk drunk drivers from 2018 in New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>Once they are installed the driver must do a breath test before turning the car on, and if the device detects alcohol above a certain level it will not let the vehicle start.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInterlocks stopped more than 100 high-risk drunk drivers with alcohol in their system from being out on our roads every day in 2020,\u201d said AA road safety spokesperson Dylan Thomsen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c100 potential drunk drivers stopped each and every day is a staggering number \u2013 especially when you consider that there are only a few thousand interlocks in use across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf there weren\u2019t interlocks in those vehicles, those drivers would have simply turned the key and been able to put themselves and others at risk on the road again.
