{"id":11119,"date":"2022-01-07T17:25:46","date_gmt":"2022-01-07T17:25:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=11119"},"modified":"2022-01-07T17:25:46","modified_gmt":"2022-01-07T17:25:46","slug":"new-u-s-report-pandemic-effects-on-dangerous-driving-alarming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/new-u-s-report-pandemic-effects-on-dangerous-driving-alarming\/","title":{"rendered":"New U.S. report: Pandemic effects on dangerous driving \u201calarming\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dangerous driving behaviors have seen a year-on-year increase in the United States, according to the results of a new survey.<\/p>\n<p>The Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF) USA, in partnership with TIRF in Canada, has released: <a href=\"https:\/\/tirf.us\/projects\/road-safety-monitors-national-opinion-polls-on-alcohol-impaired-driving-in-the-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Road Safety Monitor 2021: Alcohol impaired Driving and Covid-19 In the United States\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The seventh annual poll found the COVID-19 pandemic effects on drinking and driving to be \u201calarming\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn general, all dangerous driving behaviors were reported more often in 2021 compared to 2020,\u201d said Carl Wicklund, TIRF USA senior research advisor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile most drivers took extra care and were less likely to engage in certain risky driving behaviors during the pandemic, a smaller but significant proportion of drivers indicated they were more likely to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis helps explain the preliminary data demonstrating increases in speeding, impaired driving, and more severe crashes as a result of the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The online survey was completed in September 2021 by almost 1,500 US drivers aged 21 years or older.<\/p>\n<p>More US drivers reported often driving when they thought they were over the legal limit in 2021 than in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Results of the poll comparing behavior during the pandemic to behavior before the pandemic also revealed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>5 percent of drivers indicated they were more likely to drive within two hours of consuming alcohol<\/li>\n<li>7 percent said they were more likely to excessively speed during the pandemic<\/li>\n<li>more than 8 percent were more likely to drive distracted, drive within two hours of using drugs, and not wear a seat belt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dangerous driving behaviors have seen a year-on-year increase in the United States, according to the results of a new survey.
