{"id":11123,"date":"2022-01-07T17:49:43","date_gmt":"2022-01-07T17:49:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=11123"},"modified":"2022-01-07T17:49:43","modified_gmt":"2022-01-07T17:49:43","slug":"teen-drivers-taught-how-to-share-the-road-with-trucks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/teen-drivers-taught-how-to-share-the-road-with-trucks\/","title":{"rendered":"Teen drivers taught how to share the road with trucks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Teen drivers initiate over 75 percent of incidents involving heavy trucks, according to research.<\/p>\n<p>Now the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vtti.vt.edu\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virginia Tech Transportation Institute<\/a> (VTTI)\u2019s Division of Freight, Transit, and Heavy Vehicle Safety has developed and implemented a safety education and outreach program called \u201cSharing the Road with Trucks\u201d which aims to teach new car drivers safe practices from the beginning to create a generation of drivers that know how to safely drive near a truck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are putting the research into practice,\u201d said Matt Camden, team leader for VTTI\u2019s Research to Practice and Outreach group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the research we\u2019ve conducted at VTTI, we\u2019re leveraging naturalistic driving data to understand how people drive around trucks and the consequences of unsafe driving. This program putting these lessons learned into practice to help a specific group of drivers \u2014 teens \u2014 remain safe while driving passenger vehicles around these larger commercial vehicles from the beginning when they start driving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The VTTI\u2019s Sharing the Road Team will travel to high schools in Virginia, West Virginia, and Delaware to educate new teen drivers. Participants will have the opportunity to see a semi-truck up close and experience the large blind spots from a semi-truck driver\u2019s perspective.<\/p>\n<p>The program also addresses five key strategies for sharing the road:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don\u2019t hang out in the no-zone<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t cut trucks off<\/li>\n<li>Maintain a safe following distance<\/li>\n<li>Properly passing a truck<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t get squeezed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Teen drivers initiate over 75 percent of incidents involving heavy trucks, according to research.
