National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Chair Jennifer Homendy has challenged local advocates and safety leaders to \u201cfight like hell\u201d and use the \u201cSafe System Approach\u201d to reduce increasing deaths and injuries on the United States\u2019 roads.<\/p>\n
The Safe System Approach is a proven way to reduce highway deaths and injuries by taking a holistic look at the entire roadway system, from planning to design to use — making all roads safer for all roadway users.<\/p>\n
In a\u00a0keynote speech<\/a>\u00a0closing out the 2022\u00a0Lifesaver’s conference<\/a>, Homendy said it was a \u201cwatershed” moment for the roadway safety community.<\/p>\n \u201cFinally, some things we\u2019ve all been advocating for are now part of the first-ever National Roadway Safety Strategy from the U.S. Department of Transportation, a national call for a paradigm shift in traffic safety to the Safe System Approach, which is on NTSB\u2019s Most Wanted List of transportation safety improvements,\u201d Homendy said.<\/p>\n \u201cAt the highest levels, we\u2019re now talking the same language,\u201d Homendy said. \u201cSystems thinking isn\u2019t new. It\u2019s certainly not new to other industries. Systems thinking in highway safety used to be a radical idea only discussed by experts at events like this.
