{"id":13739,"date":"2022-04-08T15:22:27","date_gmt":"2022-04-08T15:22:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=13739"},"modified":"2022-04-08T15:22:27","modified_gmt":"2022-04-08T15:22:27","slug":"new-iihs-seat-belt-reminder-tests-rate-only-two-suvs-as-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/new-iihs-seat-belt-reminder-tests-rate-only-two-suvs-as-good\/","title":{"rendered":"New IIHS seat belt reminder tests rate only two SUVs as \u201cgood\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Only two SUVs received a \u2018good\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iihs.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Insurance Institute for Highway Safety<\/a> rating in a new seat belt reminder test.<\/p>\n<p>Federal standards specify that seat belt reminders must include an audible signal that lasts for 4-8 seconds total and a visual alert that lasts at least 60 seconds whenever the driver\u2019s seat belt is unbuckled.<\/p>\n<p>However, previous IIHS research has shown that more noticeable and persistent alerts could increase belt use among those who do not routinely buckle up by as much as 34 percent, preventing an estimated 1,500 fatalities a year.<\/p>\n<p>The IIHS has introduced the new test to push manufacturers to improve their seat belt reminders.<\/p>\n<p>Among the criteria to receive a \u201cgood\u201d rating there must be an audible signal and visual alert on the dashboard display, overhead panel or center console when the vehicle is moving at least 6 mph and the system detects an unbelted occupant in one of the front-row seating positions or the unfastening of a second-row belt that was previously buckled.<\/p>\n<p>Among the 26 vehicles tested, only two Subaru models, the Ascent and Forester, received a good rating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy now everybody knows that seat belts save lives when they are used,\u201d said IIHS President David Harkey. \u201cOur research shows that effective seat belt reminders can also save lives by getting those who aren\u2019t diligent about belt use to buckle up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese new ratings are designed to push manufacturers to realize that potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The results of all the SUVs tested can be read on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iihs.org\/news\/detail\/many-suvs-struggle-in-first-iihs-seat-belt-reminder-evaluations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IIHS website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Only two SUVs received a \u2018good\u2019 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rating in a new seat belt reminder test.
