{"id":13743,"date":"2022-04-11T09:00:56","date_gmt":"2022-04-11T09:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=13743"},"modified":"2022-04-08T15:42:50","modified_gmt":"2022-04-08T15:42:50","slug":"practice-doesnt-make-perfect-with-new-vehicle-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/practice-doesnt-make-perfect-with-new-vehicle-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Practice doesn\u2019t make perfect with new vehicle technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Owners of new vehicles with driving assistance technology may understand it better after six months of use, but the depth of their knowledge is limited, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.aaa.com\/asset\/full-report-longer-term-exposure-and-drivers-mental-models-of-adas-technology\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new study<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety research shows that a \u201clearn as you go\u201d approach still leaves gaps in understanding when compared to another group of drivers who had a strong grasp of the technology, partially due to a brief intensive hands-on training session.<\/p>\n<p>Also, researchers noted a disturbing emergence of a small, overconfident group of drivers who falsely believed their time behind the wheel gave them expertise with the system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur research finds that drivers who attempt the \u2018self-taught\u2019 approach to an advanced driver-assistance system might not fully master its entire capabilities,\u201d said Dr. David Yang, executive director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. \u201cIn contrast, drivers who have adequate training are able to effectively use the vehicle technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AAA has issued the following advice for new owners of vehicles with driver assisted technology:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Purpose\u2014Learn the purpose of driving assistance technology by requesting hands-on training at the dealership, reading the vehicle\u2019s owner\u2019s manual and visiting the manufacturer\u2019s website.<\/li>\n<li>Limitations\u2014Do not make any assumptions about what the technology can and cannot do. A driving assistance system should not be confused with a self-driving one.<\/li>\n<li>Allow Time For Practice\u2014Allow time for safe on-road practice so drivers know exactly how this technology works in real driving situations.<\/li>\n<li>Never Rely On It\u2014Do not rely on this technology; instead, act as if the vehicle does not have it with the driver always prepared to retake control if needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Owners of new vehicles with driving assistance technology may understand it better after six months of use, but the depth of their knowledge is limited, according to a new study.
