Motorists are urged to safely share the road with cyclists and bikers as part of road safety campaign.<\/p>\n
To coincide with May\u2019s Motorcycle and Bicycle Safety Awareness Month, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles<\/a> (FLHSMV) is teaming up with transportation and law enforcement organizations across the state for the \u2018Share the Road\u2019<\/a> campaign.<\/p>\n \u201cOn average last year, there were nearly 290 crashes per week involving a motorcycle or bicycle in Florida,\u201d said FLHSMV Executive Director Terry L. Rhodes.<\/p>\n \u201cSharing the road is everyone\u2019s responsibility. Whether you operate a large truck, passenger vehicle, motorcycle, or bicycle, learn your role on the road and always make an effort to look out for one another.\u201d<\/p>\n Motorcyclists and bicyclists are vulnerable road users that can be hard to see. By law, drivers must give bicyclists a minimum of three feet of clearance when driving alongside or passing them.<\/p>\n In 2021, there were 6,392 bicycle crashes and 182 bicycle fatalities in Florida \u2013 up from 158 bicycle fatalities in 2020.<\/p>\n In addition, last year, there were 8,625 motorcycle crashes and 583 motorcycle fatalities across the state \u2013 up from 510 motorcycle fatalities in 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Motorists are urged to safely share the road with cyclists and bikers as part of road safety campaign.
