Motorists in New South Wales (NSW) who run red lights and speed will be targeted by a new speed camera.<\/p>\n
Drivers caught by the camera, being installed at the intersection of Rawson Road and Blaxcell Street, Guildford, will be issued with fines and demerit points.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know that running red lights can lead to serious T-bone crashes and vehicles hitting pedestrians,\u201d said Tara McCarthy, Deputy Secretary of Safety, Environment and Regulation at Transport for NSW.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the five years from 2016 to 2020, 19 crashes occurred at this intersection and 24 people were injured, ten seriously.<\/p>\n
\u201cRoad crashes claimed the lives of 271 people on NSW roads last year with speed the biggest killer.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery life lost on NSW roads is a tragedy and this red light speed camera will help reduce risks in Guildford.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms McCarthy said the 2020 NSW speed camera review found fatal and serious injury crashes fell by 35 per cent at red light speed camera locations, and pedestrian casualties fell by almost 60 per cent.<\/p>\n
The new camera will operate in warning mode for one month during which time drivers caught speeding or running red lights will be sent a warning letter to encourage them to change their behaviour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
