{"id":14366,"date":"2023-07-13T14:27:37","date_gmt":"2023-07-13T14:27:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=14366"},"modified":"2023-08-03T14:34:02","modified_gmt":"2023-08-03T14:34:02","slug":"pedestrian-deaths-in-us-at-highest-level-since-1981","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/pedestrian-deaths-in-us-at-highest-level-since-1981\/","title":{"rendered":"Pedestrian deaths in US at highest level since 1981"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At least 7,508 people were struck and killed by vehicles in the US last year &#8211; the highest figure since 1981, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghsa.org\/resources\/Pedestrians23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new report<\/a> by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).<\/p>\n<p>The report also includes analysis of 2021 data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) which reveals the number of people killed while walking has increased 77 percent since 2010, compared to 25 percent for all other traffic-related fatalities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day, 20 people go for a walk and do not return home,\u201d said GHSA Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Adkins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are people living their daily lives \u2013 commuting to and from school and work, picking up groceries, walking the dog, getting some exercise \u2013 who died suddenly and violently.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe saddest part is that these crashes are preventable. We know what works \u2013 better-designed infrastructure, lower speeds, addressing risky driving behaviors that pose a danger to people walking. We must do these things and more to reverse this awful trend and protect people on foot. Enough is enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fatality data for the report was provided by 49 states and D.C.
