{"id":14385,"date":"2023-07-26T15:00:47","date_gmt":"2023-07-26T15:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=14385"},"modified":"2023-07-24T16:48:02","modified_gmt":"2023-07-24T16:48:02","slug":"study-finds-ignition-interlock-compliance-based-removal-laws-help-reduce-drunk-driving-repeat-offenses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/study-finds-ignition-interlock-compliance-based-removal-laws-help-reduce-drunk-driving-repeat-offenses\/","title":{"rendered":"Study finds ignition interlock compliance-based removal laws help reduce drunk driving repeat offenses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>US state laws dictating when ignition interlock devices (IIDs) may be removed from drunk driving offenders\u2019 vehicles can help reduce repeat offenses, according to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghsa.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2023-07\/IID%20CBR%20Report-July%202023%20with%20cover.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> new research released by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, all states have some type of IID program, with 33 states and the District of Columbia having a compliance-based removal (CBR) law.<\/p>\n<p>Under a CBR law, drivers with an IID installed in their vehicle must have a certain number of violation-free days before the device can be removed.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers focused on two states with CBR laws \u2013 Tennessee and Washington \u2013 and two states without \u2013 Arkansas and Iowa.<\/p>\n<p>They found that the alcohol-impaired driving reoffending rates in Tennessee and Washington were 1.7 per cent and 3.7 per cent, respectively. Meanwhile, the rates for the two states without CBR statutes \u2013 Arkansas (5.6 per cent) and Iowa (six per cent) \u2013 were higher.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day, 36 people die because someone got behind the wheel after consuming alcohol,\u201d said GHSA Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Adkins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can and must get that number to zero. Ignition interlocks are a powerful tool in our fight against the scourge of impaired driving.
