{"id":14390,"date":"2023-07-26T15:05:57","date_gmt":"2023-07-26T15:05:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=14390"},"modified":"2023-08-03T14:33:20","modified_gmt":"2023-08-03T14:33:20","slug":"study-shows-backing-for-a-safer-licensing-system-for-new-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/study-shows-backing-for-a-safer-licensing-system-for-new-drivers\/","title":{"rendered":"Study shows backing for a safer licensing system for new drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly two-thirds of people surveyed would support a phased driving licensing system to safeguard young drivers on UK roads, according to new research.<\/p>\n<p>The study from Brake, the road safety charity, and insurance company AXA UK, revealed 63 percent of people would support such a scheme for young and newly qualified drivers \u2013 with only 16 percent saying they wouldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Despite 17\u201324-year-olds accounting for only six percent of all licence holders in Britain, they represent 18 percent of all car drivers killed or seriously injured.<\/p>\n<p>Brake said young drivers were at greater risk because of age and inexperience and were more likely to take risks.<\/p>\n<p>A new report \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brake.org.uk\/sign-up?redirect_to=\/get-involved\/take-action\/mybrake\/knowledge-centre\/reports\/driver-testing-and-education\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Driver testing and education<\/a> \u2013 released this month by Brake and AXA UK, challenges the government to conduct a high-level strategic review of road safety.<\/p>\n<p>The top recommendation from the report is to implement a progressive licensing system that provides safeguards for learner and newly qualified drivers.<\/p>\n<p>A progressive licensing system \u2013 which introduces elements such as a minimum learning period and a lower blood alcohol limit, while also reducing the number of similar-aged passengers a newly licensed driver can carry \u2013 has proved successful in reducing road deaths and injuries of young drivers in other countries.<\/p>\n<p>Brake said a similar system in New Zealand led to a 23 percent reduction in car crash injuries for 15\u201319-year-olds, and a 12 percent reduction for 20\u201324-year-olds.<\/p>\n<p>Ross Moorlock, interim CEO at Brake said the report showed there was \u201cclear public support and appetite\u201d for a licensing system and for ensuring the safety of young drivers was prioritised.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ask the government to ensure that in another six years we aren\u2019t still asking for a system that we know could help safeguard young and new drivers on our roads,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly two-thirds of people surveyed would support a phased driving licensing system to safeguard young drivers on UK roads, according to new research.
