{"id":14468,"date":"2023-10-16T15:04:05","date_gmt":"2023-10-16T15:04:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=14468"},"modified":"2023-10-16T15:04:05","modified_gmt":"2023-10-16T15:04:05","slug":"deaths-on-us-roads-fall-in-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/deaths-on-us-roads-fall-in-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"Deaths on US roads fall in 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The number of people killed on America\u2019s roads dropped by just over three percent in the first half of 2023 compared to the previous year, according to the latest estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).<\/p>\n<p>The fall is despite the number of miles being travelled increasing, however the organization\u00a0has warned there is still\u00a0more work to be done.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/813514\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Early estimates of traffic\u00a0deaths<\/a> for the first half of\u00a0the year revealed\u00a0a decline\u00a0for the fifth straight quarter. An estimated 19,515 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes, representing a decrease of about 3.3\u00a0percent\u00a0as compared to 20,190 fatalities in the first half of 2022.\u00a0Fatalities declined in both the first and second quarters of 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Preliminary data\u00a0also\u00a0showed that\u00a0vehicle miles traveled in the first half of 2023 increased by about 35.1 billion miles,\u00a0roughly 2.3\u00a0per cent\u00a0higher than the same time last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we are encouraged to see traffic fatalities continue to decline from the height of the pandemic, there\u2019s still significantly more work to be done,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0NHTSA Acting Administrator Ann Carlson.<\/p>\n<p>NHTSA estimates a decrease in fatalities in 29 states, while 21 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia, are projected to have experienced increases.<\/p>\n<p>NHTSA has announced several safety initiatives aimed at reducing traffic deaths, including proposed rulemakings to require automatic emergency braking systems in passenger cars, light\u00a0trucks\u00a0and heavy vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>The agency has also published a proposed rule for seat belt warning systems and issued a Standing General Order to collect more data about crashes that occur when automated driving systems and advanced driver assistance systems are engaged.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The number of people killed on America\u2019s roads dropped by just over three percent in the first half of 2023 compared to the previous year, according to the latest estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
