Transport Accident Commission<\/a> (TAC), has joined the Department of Transport and Planning, and Victoria Police to launch Motorcyclist Awareness Month.<\/p>\nLed by the Motorcycling Community Engagement Panel (MCEP), the month-long campaign is an annual initiative encouraging both motorists and motorcyclists to share the road safely.<\/p>\n
So far this year, 35 motorcyclists have died on Victorian roads, with more than a quarter of fatalities occurring since the beginning of Spring.<\/p>\n
The TAC said motorcycles were among the most vulnerable of road users \u2013 accounting for 17 per cent of deaths and serious injuries, despite only making up four per cent of registered vehicles.<\/p>\n
TAC Head of Road Safety, Samantha Cockfield, said 60 per cent of motorcyclist fatalities involved other vehicles and called for drivers to \u201cdo their part\u201d in ensuring the roads are shared safely.<\/p>\n
\u201cEveryone needs to be aware of who they\u2019re sharing the road with \u2013 motorcyclists are encouraged to wear appropriate protective gear, and drivers should double check for riders at intersections and when changing lanes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
