{"id":14541,"date":"2024-01-04T18:44:36","date_gmt":"2024-01-04T18:44:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=14541"},"modified":"2024-01-04T18:44:36","modified_gmt":"2024-01-04T18:44:36","slug":"technology-to-detect-drunk-drivers-could-be-standard-in-all-new-cars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/technology-to-detect-drunk-drivers-could-be-standard-in-all-new-cars\/","title":{"rendered":"Technology to detect drunk drivers could be standard in all new cars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration<\/a> (NHTSA) says it has taken the first step towards making technology, which detects drunk drivers, standard in new cars.<\/p>\n<p>The NHTSA estimates that fatalities, injuries, and property damage from alcohol-impaired driving costs society $280 billion in lost wages, lost quality of life, medical costs, and more.<\/p>\n<p>The agency said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/document\/anprm-advanced-impaired-driving-technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking<\/a> it has announced helps lay the groundwork for potential alcohol-impairment detection technology standards in all new passenger vehicles when the technology is mature.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is tragic that drunk driving crashes are one of the leading causes of roadway fatalities in this country and far too many lives are lost,\u201d said Polly Trottenberg, the US Department of Transportation\u2019s Deputy Secretary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking we are announcing is the first step toward a new safety standard requiring alcohol-impaired-driving prevention technology in new passenger vehicles.
