{"id":14662,"date":"2024-05-30T15:00:25","date_gmt":"2024-05-30T15:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=14662"},"modified":"2024-05-29T20:28:54","modified_gmt":"2024-05-29T20:28:54","slug":"roadside-drug-testing-to-be-introduced-in-new-zealand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/roadside-drug-testing-to-be-introduced-in-new-zealand\/","title":{"rendered":"Roadside drug testing to be introduced in New Zealand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The New Zealand Government has announced it will introduce new legislation by the end of the year which will allow police to use roadside drug testing.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.co.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AA<\/a> has welcomed the move but said it was \u201cridiculous\u201d that testing had taken so long to be introduced in the country.<\/p>\n<p>New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi figures show out of 374 total road deaths in 2022, there were 218 where drugs and\/or alcohol &#8211; both over and under the legal limit &#8211; were detected in a driver. Drugs were involved in 112 of those deaths.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith drugs involved in so much harm on New Zealand roads, it is ridiculous testing has taken so long to be introduced,\u201d said AA road safety spokesperson Dylan Thomsen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVictoria in Australia introduced drug testing 20 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tests will be an important deterrent to those thinking about getting behind the wheel while under the influence, and a safety net to catch impaired drivers before they are able to harm themselves and others.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New Zealand Government has announced it will introduce new legislation by the end of the year which will allow police to use roadside drug testing.
