{"id":14834,"date":"2024-10-14T18:32:30","date_gmt":"2024-10-14T18:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=14834"},"modified":"2024-10-14T18:32:30","modified_gmt":"2024-10-14T18:32:30","slug":"drivers-quickly-learn-to-skirt-limits-set-by-partial-automation-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/drivers-quickly-learn-to-skirt-limits-set-by-partial-automation-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Drivers quickly learn to skirt limits set by partial automation systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Drivers are more likely to multitask when using partial automation, and some manage to do so even while playing by the rules of the systems\u2019 attention requirements, according to new research from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iihs.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Insurance Institute for Highway Safety<\/a> (IIHS).<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iihs.org\/topics\/bibliography\/ref\/2311\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">month long study<\/a> of driver behavior conducted with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology\u2019s AgeLab, found drivers were much more likely to check their phones, eat a sandwich or do other visual-manual activities while using one car manufacturer\u2019s partial automation system than when driving unassisted.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iihs.org\/topics\/bibliography\/ref\/2312\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second study<\/a> focusing on another autopilot system saw drivers quickly mastering the timing interval of its attention reminder feature so that they could prevent warnings from escalating to more serious interventions.
