{"id":15089,"date":"2025-05-09T15:00:37","date_gmt":"2025-05-09T15:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=15089"},"modified":"2025-05-01T23:14:31","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T23:14:31","slug":"new-research-investigates-if-smartphone-apps-hold-the-key-to-safer-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/new-research-investigates-if-smartphone-apps-hold-the-key-to-safer-drivers\/","title":{"rendered":"New research investigates if smartphone apps hold the key to safer drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>New <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.aaa.com\/asset\/smartphone-based-feedback-designed-to-encourage-safe-driving-report-summary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AAA research<\/a> has found that app-based interventions may help curb risky driving behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>In the study, The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety examined whether providing feedback and incentives\u2014typical of usage-based insurance (UBI) programs\u2014enhances driver safety.<\/p>\n<p>The trial examined the use of handheld phones, speeding, hard braking, and rapid acceleration.<\/p>\n<p>Participants were divided into four groups, with different levels of feedback and advice over a 12-week period.<\/p>\n<p>The study found the groups that received feedback saw clear improvements in driver behavior:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Up to a 13% reduction in speeding<\/li>\n<li>Up to a 21% reduction in hard braking<\/li>\n<li>Up to a 25% reduction in rapid acceleration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Meanwhile the use of handheld phones remained unchanged.<\/p>\n<p>Participants also reported how helpful the following tactics were in changing their behaviors:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>4% \u2013 the potential to earn extra money<\/li>\n<li>9% \u2013 weekly driving feedback via text message<\/li>\n<li>8% \u2013 weekly dashboard (provided detailed driving information for the week)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The AAA said its research showed that the kinds of feedback and incentives offered by UBI programs can improve driver safety across a range of behaviors.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New AAA research has found that app-based interventions may help curb risky driving behaviors.
