{"id":15119,"date":"2025-05-30T15:00:32","date_gmt":"2025-05-30T15:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=15119"},"modified":"2025-05-27T23:26:23","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T23:26:23","slug":"new-study-highlights-a-gap-in-current-automated-driving-system-regulations-how-they-account-for-social-driving-behavior","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/new-study-highlights-a-gap-in-current-automated-driving-system-regulations-how-they-account-for-social-driving-behavior\/","title":{"rendered":"New study highlights a gap in current automated driving system regulations\u2014 how they account for social driving behavior"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new study has been published investigating social driving behaviors and self-driving cars.<\/p>\n<p>The SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research has issued the report <a href=\"https:\/\/swov.nl\/en\/publicatie\/social-driving-behaviour-automated-driving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u2018Social driving behavior in automated driving\u2019<\/a> which highlights a gap in current automated driving system (ADS) regulations\u2014 how they account for social driving behavior.<\/p>\n<p>SWOV researchers said that while human drivers regularly engage in socially aware driving\u2014like yielding to others or anticipating unpredictable moves\u2014ADS are not yet required or tested to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>The team found that current testing methods\u2014such as virtual simulations, real-world trials, and in-service monitoring\u2014are not well suited to detect social driving flaws in ADS.<\/p>\n<p>Key interactions with human road users may go unnoticed, especially since many systems rely on after-the-fact reporting or narrow testing conditions, the study said.<\/p>\n<p>The SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research said it could have implications for the safety of these vehicles: if an automated car lacks pro-social behaviors, it might inadvertently block traffic, create confusion, or even cause crashes.<\/p>\n<p>The authors have argued for clearer definitions, better testing tools such as advanced driving simulators with better models of human behavior, and early identification of social interaction issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout a proactive, top-down approach to regulating social driving in ADS, safety improvements may come only after incidents occur\u2014defeating the very purpose of automation,\u201d the SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new study has been published investigating social driving behaviors and self-driving cars.
