{"id":15351,"date":"2025-12-16T18:43:42","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T18:43:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=15351"},"modified":"2025-12-16T18:43:42","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T18:43:42","slug":"number-of-cyclists-and-e-scooter-users-wearing-helmets-drops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/number-of-cyclists-and-e-scooter-users-wearing-helmets-drops\/","title":{"rendered":"Number of cyclists and e-scooter users wearing helmets drops"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsa.ie\/docs\/default-source\/road-safety\/r4.1-research-reports\/safe-road-use\/use-of-high-visibility-clothing-and-helmet-wearing-2025.pdf?sfvrsn=ddfe5c83_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new report<\/a> has found a \u201cconcerning\u201d decline in the number of cyclists and e-scooter users wearing helmets.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsa.ie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Road Safety Authority<\/a> (RSA) has published the findings of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsa.ie\/docs\/default-source\/road-safety\/r4.1-research-reports\/safe-road-use\/use-of-high-visibility-clothing-and-helmet-wearing-2025.pdf?sfvrsn=ddfe5c83_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Motorcyclist &amp; Pedal Cyclist Use of High Visibility Clothing and Helmet Wearing Observational Survey 2025<\/a>, which also reveals persistently low levels of high-visibility clothing use across all bike categories.<\/p>\n<p>The key findings of the study were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Very high helmet wearing rates were observed once again among motorcyclists, at 98%, and this result is consistent with the findings from past studies.<\/li>\n<li>Much lower helmet wearing rates were observed among pedal cyclists, at 50%. This represents a decrease of 7% from 2024.<\/li>\n<li>A significant fall in helmet wearing rates among e-scooter riders, at 27%, down 15% from last year.<\/li>\n<li>A 10-year downward trend has been observed in rates of high visibility clothing usage among motorcyclists and pedal cyclists.<\/li>\n<li>28% of motorcyclists wore high visibility clothing, a slight increase from 2024, and 20% of pedal cyclists wore high visibility clothing, unchanged from 2024.<\/li>\n<li>Only 19% of e-scooter riders wore high visibility clothing, representing a slight increase year-on-year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cWhile we welcome the continued strong compliance with helmet wearing among motorcyclists, the decline among pedal cyclists and e-scooter riders is deeply concerning,\u201d said Sam Waide, Chief Executive of the RSA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA decision to wear a helmet &#8211; or to make yourself more visible &#8211; can be the difference between a minor incident and a life-altering one.
