{"id":15361,"date":"2025-12-24T15:00:04","date_gmt":"2025-12-24T15:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=15361"},"modified":"2025-12-23T20:45:04","modified_gmt":"2025-12-23T20:45:04","slug":"ai-trial-slashes-risk-at-major-pedestrian-crossing-by-more-than-30","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/ai-trial-slashes-risk-at-major-pedestrian-crossing-by-more-than-30\/","title":{"rendered":"AI trial slashes risk at major pedestrian crossing by more than 30%"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cutting-edge artificial intelligence is being used to make one of Sydney\u2019s busiest pedestrian hotspots safer.<\/p>\n<p>A world-first trial at Manly in Sydney\u2019s Northern Beaches has cut risky crossings by more than a third, using smart cameras, AI data processing and adaptive traffic lights to safely move crowds pouring off ferries and buses.<\/p>\n<p>At the intersection of The Esplanade and Belgrave Street, where pedestrian numbers can surge from a dozen to more than a thousand in minutes, the technology has delivered a 34 per cent drop in people stepping out on the flashing red man, the New South Wales Government said.<\/p>\n<p>The high-tech smart system uses thermal imaging cameras to detect real-time crowd numbers, feeding live data straight into Transport for NSW\u2019s adaptive traffic platform, SCATS.<\/p>\n<p>When the system detects a surge, it automatically gives people more frequent or longer green-walk signals, reducing wait times and stopping dangerous crowd spill-over onto the road.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a clear example of how new tools can help keep communities safe, and why we\u2019re exploring more locations where this approach can make a real difference,\u201d said Minister for Roads, Jenny Aitchison.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cutting-edge artificial intelligence is being used to make one of Sydney\u2019s busiest pedestrian hotspots safer.
