{"id":15387,"date":"2026-02-03T15:00:02","date_gmt":"2026-02-03T15:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=15387"},"modified":"2026-01-30T19:14:42","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T19:14:42","slug":"study-reveals-women-at-higher-risk-of-injury-than-men-during-crashes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/study-reveals-women-at-higher-risk-of-injury-than-men-during-crashes\/","title":{"rendered":"Study reveals women at higher risk of injury than men during crashes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Women are at higher risk of injury than men during vehicle crashes, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/813754\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new research<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The study by the <a href=\"National%20Highway%20Traffic%20Safety%20Administration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Highway Traffic Safety Administration<\/a> (NHTSA) revealed women have a statistically significant higher risk of injury than men in 26% of the 150 crash injury models, and women have a higher risk more frequently for moderate injuries.<\/p>\n<p>The study comes after the US Department of Transportation launched the first-of-its-kind female crash test dummy, THOR-05F.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis study reaffirms the importance of the THOR and will help the Department further build on the progress its already made in lowering traffic fatalities,\u201d said NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison.<\/p>\n<p>NHTSA studied six crash types for this report: frontal, near-side, far-side and rear crashes; one combining all four of those crash types; and one for rollover crashes.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike other recent studies, NHTSA\u2019s study covered a broader range of crash types, occupant restraint conditions, and seating positions.<\/p>\n<p>Findings related to moderate and higher injuries include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>46% higher injury risk in frontal crashes.<\/li>\n<li>55% higher injury risk in rollover crashes.<\/li>\n<li>62% higher risk for lower extremity injuries in frontal crashes (including knee, thigh, hip, leg, foot and ankle).<\/li>\n<li>128% higher risk of injuries to the foot and ankle in frontal crashes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This new injury report\u2019s results suggest the following for both men and women:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Injury risk increases with a person\u2019s age. When compared to the youngest age group (13 to 24 year olds), each subsequent age group had higher moderate-to-severe and fatal injury risk in all but rollover crashes.<\/li>\n<li>Having a body mass index of 30 or higher was frequently associated with significantly higher injury risk, especially in frontal crashes.<\/li>\n<li>Occupant height was not significantly associated with injury risk in 86% of injuries studied.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Women are at higher risk of injury than men during vehicle crashes, according to new research.
