{"id":15399,"date":"2026-02-27T15:00:41","date_gmt":"2026-02-27T15:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=15399"},"modified":"2026-02-25T23:30:24","modified_gmt":"2026-02-25T23:30:24","slug":"new-training-course-helps-first-responders-deal-with-autonomous-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/new-training-course-helps-first-responders-deal-with-autonomous-vehicles\/","title":{"rendered":"New training course helps first responders deal with autonomous vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) and autonomous driving technology company Waymo have created an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghsa.org\/resource-hub\/waymo-first-responder-av-training\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online safety training course<\/a>\u00a0aimed at first responders.<\/p>\n<p>The course aims to give first responders \u2013 including law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical services and tow-truck operators \u2013 the knowledge and tools to safely interact with new and emerging technologies like autonomous vehicles (AVs), especially when there is no driver.<\/p>\n<p>To ensure first responders feel confident, Waymo\u2019s First Responder Outreach team leads hands-on vehicle trainings with local fire, police and EMS organizations well in advance of opening their service to public riders.<\/p>\n<p>This new, complimentary online instruction supplements the comprehensive in-person training and safety resources available in cities where Waymo vehicles are deployed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWaymo and other AVs can unlock tremendous safety and mobility benefits for everyone,\u201d said GHSA CEO Jonathan Adkins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe owe it to our first responders \u2013 the first line of defense when there\u2019s a problem on the road \u2013 to make sure they are prepared to safely interact with these vehicles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The\u202ffree\u202fonline training\u202fis divided into three modules:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Introduce Waymo\u2019s fully autonomous vehicles, show where they currently\u202foperate\u202fand explain how the vehicles respond to police and emergency operations.<\/li>\n<li>Provide detailed instructions on how to approach and interact with a Waymo autonomous vehicle.<\/li>\n<li>Explain critical safety procedures for\u202ffirst responders who need to extricate passengers or disconnect a vehicle\u2019s battery.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to the online Waymo training, GHSA has\u202fdeveloped a first responder autonomous vehicle\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ghsa.org\/autonomous-vehicle-av-first-responder-resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resource page<\/a>\u00a0that provides information about where AVs are being deployed and\u202fincludes links to first responder resources available from other developers, like Aurora and\u202fZoox.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) and autonomous driving technology company Waymo have created an\u00a0online safety training course\u00a0aimed at first responders.
