{"id":15500,"date":"2026-05-19T19:22:54","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T19:22:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edrivingcomstg.wpenginepowered.com\/three60\/?p=15500"},"modified":"2026-05-19T19:24:43","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T19:24:43","slug":"record-breaking-travel-numbers-expected-over-memorial-day-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/record-breaking-travel-numbers-expected-over-memorial-day-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Record breaking travel numbers expected over Memorial Day weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaa.com\/International\/?area=ttp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AAA<\/a> is predicting a record number of Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The organization projects 45 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home between Thursday, May 21 and Monday, May 25.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s domestic travel forecast is slightly higher than last year and sets a new Memorial Day weekend record with 39.1 million people traveling by car and 3.66 million expected to fly to their destinations.<\/p>\n<p>While gas prices are higher than last Memorial Day weekend, average ticket prices for flights are lower than last year for those who booked early.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMemorial Day\u00a0marks the unofficial start of summer,\u00a0and\u00a0for most Americans, it\u2019s a three-day weekend,\u201d\u00a0said Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTravel demand\u00a0remains\u00a0strong, and\u00a0despite\u00a0higher fuel prices,\u00a0many people are prioritizing leisure travel during holiday breaks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Driving is the most\u00a0popular\u00a0way\u00a0to travel and makes up 87% of the share of Memorial Day travelers.<\/p>\n<p>The AAA is reminding motorists to put safety first when driving and check their car\u2019s battery, tire pressure, and fluids.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/inrix.com\/__;!!CVJG4Ve8!-BR0ly18BvuNJ-jDQH5TgWtgZ40ljPpn3eCs_yLxRfSTzWksxQzChxrGbc4ptsutJ3MFB8t--_pd3QT47IbZBezD$\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">INRIX<\/a>, the traffic analytics company, said drivers should expect the heaviest congestion on Thursday and Friday between 3pm and\u00a06pm and\u00a0Monday afternoon.\u00a0Sunday should be the lightest day for traffic.<\/p>\n<p>The organization warned that as congestion moves out of metro areas during holiday periods and onto highways, the risk of\u00a0crashes increases with many drivers\u00a0navigating unfamiliar routes outside of their\u00a0normal commuting patterns.
