{"id":15506,"date":"2026-05-27T17:50:28","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T17:50:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edrivingcomstg.wpenginepowered.com\/three60\/?p=15506"},"modified":"2026-05-27T17:50:28","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T17:50:28","slug":"new-study-reveals-temperature-impacts-on-ev-and-hybrid-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/new-study-reveals-temperature-impacts-on-ev-and-hybrid-vehicles\/","title":{"rendered":"New study reveals\u202ftemperature impacts\u202fon\u202fEV and hybrid vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new study by the AAA has shown\u00a0extreme temperatures\u00a0reduce efficiency, range,\u00a0and increase operating costs for electric vehicles\u00a0(EVs)\u00a0and hybrids.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers tested six vehicles at\u00a0cold, moderate, and hot temperatures\u00a0to examine how electrified powertrains perform under non-ideal conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Building on their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.aaa.com\/2019\/02\/cold-weather-reduces-electric-vehicle-range\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2019 study<\/a>,\u00a0the AAA automotive engineering team, in partnership with the Automobile Club of Southern California\u2019s Automotive Research Center, evaluated the powertrains of three EVs and three hybrids.<\/p>\n<p>Testing was conducted on a\u00a0chassis\u00a0dynamometer a device like a treadmill for cars with the HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) set at 72 degrees in the vehicles and the temperatures in the laboratory test cell at\u00a020\u00b0F, 75\u00b0F, and 95\u00b0F.<\/p>\n<p>The study found in hot temperatures (95\u00b0F), hybrid vehicles experienced a 12% decrease in fuel efficiency\u00a0(miles per gallon, MPG). While EVs showed a\u00a010.4%\u00a0reduction\u00a0in\u00a0efficiency\u00a0(MPGe,\u00a0miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent)\u00a0and an\u00a08.5%\u00a0loss\u00a0of driving range compared to\u00a0moderate temperature\u00a0(75\u00b0F).<\/p>\n<p>In cold temperatures (20\u00b0F) hybrids lost 22.8%\u00a0in fuel economy in the study while EVs demonstrated a\u00a035.6%\u00a0drop in MPGe and a\u00a039.0% decrease\u00a0in calculated driving range.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEVs are efficient in moderate temperatures but lose significant range in the cold,\u201d said Greg Brannon, director of automotive engineering and research at AAA. \u201cWe expected this from our previous research, but were surprised by the 23% reduction in fuel economy for the hybrids in cold temperatures.
