{"id":15522,"date":"2026-06-04T15:00:36","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T15:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edrivingcomstg.wpenginepowered.com\/three60\/?p=15522"},"modified":"2026-05-27T21:39:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T21:39:11","slug":"road-safety-charity-calls-for-anti-drunk-driving-technology-to-be-fitted-in-all-new-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/road-safety-charity-calls-for-anti-drunk-driving-technology-to-be-fitted-in-all-new-vehicles\/","title":{"rendered":"Road safety charity calls for anti-drunk driving technology to be fitted in all new vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Drunk driving killed 11,904 people in the US in 2024, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov\/Api\/Public\/ViewPublication\/813791\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a new report<\/a>\u00a0by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).<\/p>\n<p>Now <a href=\"https:\/\/madd.org\/about-madd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">road safety charity MADD<\/a> is calling for anti-drunk driving technology to be fitted in all new vehicles to eradicate drink driving.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach of these individuals represents a life taken too soon by a crime that\u2019s 100% preventable,\u201d said MADD CEO Stacey D Stewart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we continue working with communities, elected officials, law enforcement, and technology partners, the only sustainable path forward is to eliminate impaired driving entirely through the advancement of life-saving technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>NHTSA\u2019s 2024 report also shows uneven progress across the country. While some states have reduced impaired driving fatalities compared to pre-pandemic levels, 37 states have experienced increases. Just between 2023 and 2024, 19 states saw increases in drunk driving deaths, with the highest increases in Vermont (41%), West Virginia (32%), and Oklahoma (27%).<\/p>\n<p>MADD is continuing to advocate for the protection and full implementation of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/madd.org\/halt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bipartisan HALT Drunk Driving Law<\/a>, which requires a federal standard for passive anti-drunk driving technology in all new vehicles and is projected to save more than 10,000 lives each year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe HALT Drunk Driving Law represents the most consequential step toward safer roads and communities,\u201d Stewart added. \u201cIt enables technology that preserves a normal driving experience, except when someone is impaired. We are working closely with elected, government and industry officials and urge NHTSA to issue a federal safety standard requiring this technology in all new vehicles.
