{"id":15551,"date":"2026-07-02T15:00:17","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T15:00:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edrivingcomstg.wpenginepowered.com\/three60\/?p=15551"},"modified":"2026-07-06T20:30:37","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T20:30:37","slug":"nsc-projects-increased-traffic-crash-risk-during-fourth-of-july-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/nsc-projects-increased-traffic-crash-risk-during-fourth-of-july-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"NSC projects increased traffic crash risk during fourth of July weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Safety Council (NSC) is urging all roadway users to make safe choices this fourth of July by driving sober, buckling up and observing speed limits.<\/p>\n<p>NSC analysis estimates 410 people may die in motor vehicle crashes during the 2026 Independence Day holiday period, from 6pm Thursday, July 2, to 11.59pm Sunday, July 5.<\/p>\n<p>The NSC estimates an additional 100 lives could be saved this holiday period if all vehicle occupants wear a seat belt.<\/p>\n<p>The organization said last year, an estimated 38% of fatal traffic crashes involved an alcohol-impaired driver during Independence Day weekend, reinforcing the importance of planning ahead for a sober driver.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we prepare to commemorate our nation\u2019s 250<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary, we have an opportunity to make this Independence Day one of the safest yet,\u201d said Lorraine Martin, NSC CEO. \u201cEvery driver has the power to help prevent a tragedy by making simple, safe choices behind the wheel. Driving sober, slowing down and staying focused on the road can help ensure more people spend this holiday weekend with family and friends rather than getting hurt or losing their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NSC has offered these simple steps to help keep all roadway users safe:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always check your vehicle to ensure children, pets and other passengers are not\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsc.org\/road\/safety-topics\/child-passenger-safety\/kids-in-hot-cars?srsltid=AfmBOoreBxKQsLZmlHKS3_70vWacALahHoKC0uB1dkyV4OEF8xXHZYx0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">left behind in hot cars<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsc.org\/road\/safety-topics\/distracted-driving\/distracted-driving-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Avoid distractions<\/a>\u00a0while driving, including cell phones and infotainment systems<\/li>\n<li>Get plenty of sleep and avoid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsc.org\/road\/safety-topics\/fatigued-driver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">driving while fatigued<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Plan ahead and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsc.org\/road\/safety-topics\/impaired-driving\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">designate a sober driver<\/a>, or make alternate arrangements<\/li>\n<li>Check your vehicle for open safety recalls at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.checktoprotect.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ChecktoProtect.org<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Follow posted speed limits and buckle up on every trip<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The National Safety Council (NSC) is urging all roadway users to make safe choices this fourth of July by driving sober, buckling up and observing speed limits.
