{"id":15573,"date":"2026-07-17T15:00:10","date_gmt":"2026-07-17T15:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edrivingcomstg.wpenginepowered.com\/three60\/?p=15573"},"modified":"2026-07-16T18:02:19","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T18:02:19","slug":"amendment-to-automated-vehicle-framework-to-boost-safety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/amendment-to-automated-vehicle-framework-to-boost-safety\/","title":{"rendered":"Amendment to Automated Vehicle Framework to boost safety"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of its new Automated Vehicle Framework, the US Department of Transportation\u2019s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has commenced rulemaking for <a href=\"https:\/\/public-inspection.federalregister.gov\/2026-12981.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its fifth update<\/a> to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS).<\/p>\n<p>The measure would eliminate the mandate for manual brake pedals in vehicles designed to be driven exclusively by automated driving systems (ADS).<\/p>\n<p>The move builds on the agency\u2019s effort to safely unleash American innovation and rethink the types of equipment \u2013 like windshield wipers or a rearview mirror \u2013 vehicles don\u2019t need if a human being will never drive the car.<\/p>\n<p>Other braking performance requirements, including strict stopping distance standards, will be preserved. For ADS-equipped vehicles with manual driving controls, all existing standard requirements will be retained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are at the cusp of the greatest technological revolution in vehicle technology since the innovation of the Model T,\u201d NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we want America to lead the way, we have to reimagine our regulatory framework.
