{"id":7986,"date":"2018-11-02T09:00:44","date_gmt":"2018-11-02T09:00:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=7986"},"modified":"2018-11-02T12:35:03","modified_gmt":"2018-11-02T12:35:03","slug":"texas-marks-18-year-milestone-of-daily-road-deaths","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/texas-marks-18-year-milestone-of-daily-road-deaths\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas marks 18-year milestone of daily road deaths"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At least one person has died on Texas roadways every single day since November 7, 2000.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to end this deadly 18-year milestone, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), through its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.txdot.gov\/inside-txdot\/media-center\/psas\/end-streak.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#EndTheStreakTX <\/a>campaign, is reminding drivers that they play a role in keeping roads safe for everyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all have the power to end the streak of daily deaths on Texas roadways,\u201d said Texas Transportation Commissioner Laura Ryan. \u201cDon\u2019t drink and drive; put away the cell phone; buckle up; and obey traffic laws. Be the driver you would want next to you, in front of you or behind you. Together, we can end the streak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since November 7, 2000, fatalities resulting from vehicle crashes on Texas roadways have numbered more than 66,000. The leading causes of fatalities continue to be failure to stay in one lane, alcohol and speed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s heartbreaking to know that every day for the past 18 years someone has lost a spouse, child, friend or neighbor on our state\u2019s roadways,\u201d said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass. \u201cEnding this deadly daily streak is a shared responsibility. We will continue to engineer our roads to be more forgiving of drivers\u2019 errors, but we all must work toward ending such preventable contributing factors as distracted driving, speeding and drunk driving. Let\u2019s make it a priority to be safe, focused and responsible behind the wheel. Let\u2019s end the streak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To decrease the chances of roadway crashes and fatalities, TxDOT reminds drivers to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Buckle seatbelts \u2013 all passengers need to be buckled<\/li>\n<li>Pay attention \u2013 put phone away and avoid distractions<\/li>\n<li>Never drink and drive \u2013 drunk driving kills; get a sober ride home<\/li>\n<li>Drive the speed limit \u2013 obey speed limits and drive slower when weather conditions warrant<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At least one person has died on Texas roadways every single day since November 7, 2000.
