{"id":8505,"date":"2019-04-01T13:13:52","date_gmt":"2019-04-01T13:13:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=8505"},"modified":"2019-04-01T13:13:54","modified_gmt":"2019-04-01T13:13:54","slug":"half-of-car-drivers-say-cyclists-are-not-human-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/half-of-car-drivers-say-cyclists-are-not-human-enough\/","title":{"rendered":"Half of car drivers say cyclists are \u201cnot human enough\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>More than half of car drivers think cyclists\nare not completely human, according to the findings of a new study by\nresearchers at Monash University, QUT\u2019s Centre for Accident Research &amp; Road\nSafety \u2013 Queensland (CARRS-Q) and Professor Nick Haslam at the University of\nMelbourne\u2019s School of Psychological Sciences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the first time a study has look at\na road-user group with the problem of dehumanisation, which is typically\nstudied in relation to attitudes towards racial or ethnic groups. Researchers\nsay that, if drivers can put a human face to cyclists, this could reduce\naggression directed at cyclists and road trauma involving riders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen you don\u2019t think someone is \u2018fully\u2019\nhuman, it\u2019s easier to justify hatred or aggression towards them. This can set\nup an escalating cycle of resentment,\u201d said Lead Author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monash.edu\/engineering\/alexadelbosc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr Alexa Delbosc<\/a>, Senior Lecturer in the Institute\nof Transport Studies (Department of Civil Engineering) at Monash University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf cyclists feel dehumanised by other road\nusers, they may be more likely to act out against motorists, feeding into a\nself-fulfilling prophecy that further fuels dehumanisation against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUltimately we want to understand this\nprocess so we can do a better job at putting a human face to people who ride\nbikes, so that hopefully we can help put a stop to the abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1369847818308593?dgcid=author\" target=\"_blank\">Dehumanization of cyclists predicts self-reported aggressive behaviour toward them<\/a> published in <em>Transportation Research Part F: Traffic Psychology and Behaviour<\/em>, suggests that cyclists have been conceptualised as a minority group and a target of negative attitudes and behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study, involving 442 respondents in\nVictoria, New South Wales and Queensland, identified people\u2019s attitude to\ncyclists and whether they were cyclists or non-cyclists themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Acts of aggression towards cyclists were not uncommon, with 17% saying they had used their car to deliberately block a cyclist, 11% had deliberately driven their car close to a cyclist and 9% had used their car to cut off a cyclist. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>More than half of car drivers think cyclists are not completely human, according to the findings of a new study by researchers at Monash University, QUT\u2019s Centre for Accident Research &amp; Road Safety \u2013 Queensland (CARRS-Q) and Professor Nick Haslam at the University of Melbourne\u2019s School of Psychological Sciences.
