{"id":8515,"date":"2019-04-12T13:27:06","date_gmt":"2019-04-12T13:27:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=8515"},"modified":"2019-04-12T13:27:07","modified_gmt":"2019-04-12T13:27:07","slug":"texas-reports-almost-70-crashes-per-day-in-work-zones","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/texas-reports-almost-70-crashes-per-day-in-work-zones\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas reports almost 70 crashes per day in work zones"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In 2018, a total of 25,162 work zone\ntraffic crashes were reported in Texas, an average of nearly 70 crashes per day.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of deaths in construction zones\nfell by 20% from 2017, yet 161 people still lost their lives and 684 were\nseriously injured. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To coincide with National Work Zone\nAwareness Week, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is highlighting its\n<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.txdot.gov\/driver\/share-road\/be-safe-drive-smart.html\">Be\nSafe. Drive Smart.<\/a><\/em> campaign, reminding motorists to stay alert and\nexercise caution when driving through work zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWork zones present a different environment\nfor drivers to navigate with&nbsp; concrete barriers, slow-moving heavy\nequipment and vehicles that may make sudden stops,\u201d said TxDOT Executive\nDirector James Bass. \u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019re urging drivers to pay special attention\nin work zones on Texas roadways\u2014for their protection and the safety of highway\nwork crews.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At any given time, Texas has as many as\n3,000 active work zones across the 80,000 miles of road TxDOT maintains. Since\nthe leading causes of work zone crashes in Texas are speeding and driver\ninattention, TxDOT asks motorists to avoid distractions and put their phones\naway, obey road crew flaggers, slow down and follow posted work zone speed\nlimits.
