{"id":8586,"date":"2019-05-01T18:11:04","date_gmt":"2019-05-01T18:11:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/?p=8586"},"modified":"2019-05-02T08:25:31","modified_gmt":"2019-05-02T08:25:31","slug":"motorcycle-safety-campaign-launches-in-texas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.edriving.com\/three60\/motorcycle-safety-campaign-launches-in-texas\/","title":{"rendered":"Motorcycle safety campaign launches in Texas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.txdot.gov\/\">Texas Department of\nTransportation (TxDOT)<\/a> is launching a new campaign \u2013 <em>Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles<\/em> \u2013 in support of National\nMotorcycle Awareness Month this May. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The campaign urges drivers to be extra cautious, since\nmotorcyclists are more difficult to see and less protected than other\nmotorists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLast year motorcycle fatalities were reduced by 17 percent,\nwhich is a big step forward; still one death is too many for the Lone Star\nState,\u201d said TxDOT Executive Director James Bass. \u201cAs motorcyclists hit the\nroad to enjoy the open air and beautiful scenery, it\u2019s important that vehicle\ndrivers and motorcyclists remain alert and look out for each other on the road.\nWe want everyone to enjoy what Texas offers and reach their destinations safely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, 417 motorcyclists died on Texas roadways, an\naverage of more than one fatality a day. TxDOT cautions drivers to be extra\nvigilant when approaching, turning, or driving through an intersection, as 30\npercent of Texas motorcycle deaths in 2018 were intersection-related.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A motorcyclist\u2019s \u201cbraking\u201d is not always obvious to\nmotorists. Motorcycles decelerate faster than vehicles and motorcyclists can\noften downshift instead of applying the brake, especially when driving around a\ncurve. This means at times brake lights will not be engaged to signal the\nmotorcycle is slowing down.&nbsp;Drivers are encouraged to allow for extra\ndistance when they are behind motorcycles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TxDOT\u2019s tips for\ndrivers:<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Look twice for motorcycles, especially at\nintersections<\/li><li>Assume motorcycles are closer than they appear\nto be and avoid turning in front of an oncoming motorcycle<\/li><li>Use turn signals and check blind spots before\nchanging lanes<\/li><li>Maintain a safe following distance<\/li><li>Give motorcyclists a full lane, especially when\npassing<\/li><li>Obey posted speed limits<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Campaign dates: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TxDOT\u2019s <em>Share the\nRoad: Look Twice for Motorcycles<\/em> campaign will conduct the following events\naround the state featuring virtual reality games designed to educate drivers\nand motorcyclists about the importance of watching out for each other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>May 3 \u2013 El Paso<\/li><li>May 10 \u2013 Corpus Christi<\/li><li>May 11 \u2013 Houston (Sugar Land)<\/li><li>May 12 \u2013 Austin<\/li><li>May 17 \u2013 Dallas-Fort Worth (Frisco)<\/li><li>May 18 \u2013 Midland<\/li><li>May 19 \u2013 San Antonio<\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is launching a new campaign \u2013 Share the Road: Look Twice for Motorcycles \u2013 in support of National Motorcycle Awareness Month this May.
