The Department of Transport in South Africa has started the roll out of a new breathalyzer that will enable police officers to arrest impaired drivers on the spot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Evidential Breathalyzer Alcohol Test (EBAT) was launched\nby Minister of Transport Dr Blade Nzimande. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI must indicate that the road towards the realisation of\nEBAT has been a difficult one,\u201d Nzimande said. \u201cIt had legislative as well as\nadministrative challenges, but at the end, all those challenges have been\novercome. This includes ensuring that at all times during our roadblocks\ntargeted at alcohol testing, we have registered nursing sisters. This will\nensure that no driver will evade being arrested for drinking and driving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Nzimande stated that those under 35 years are mostly affected by road crashes and urged all youth organizations to come forward and help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYoung people are perishing on our roads,\u201d he said. \u201cRoad\ncrashes rob households of people that are in the prime of their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
